| What is Self-talk? Self-talk is the constant stream of thoughts that run through your head. Most of the time you are not even aware that they are happening. These automatic thoughts can be positive or negative and the extent to which they are more so one than the other is in part a product of other aspects of your lifestyle. Positive self-talk effects improved social experience, health, emotional well-being, and resistance to negative stress.
How does self-talk develop? Thoughts that arise from self-talk come from; logic and reason, emotion (and stress), misconception, and habit. The pattern of your self-talk (the balance of positive to negative) is a makeup of these components. Life experience also effects your self-talk, although the reflection of life experience is altered by habit, emotion, the effect emotion has over your logic and reason, and the misconceptions you hold. Largely your self-talk is a direct reflection of your mood and will change accordingly as your mood changes. Because of this, your current emotional state is a good measure for the pattern of your self-talk. When you are emotionally down pay added attention to your self-talk.
Who cares about Self-talk? You should care about your own self-talk. All your thoughts, all your mental images, and all your feelings connected with your thoughts and mental images will later manifest as your reality, good or bad. Positive self-talk will result in more positive events being attracted into your life. Positive self-talk is also associated with less negative stress, improved health and sense of well-being.
Does Self-talk effect future events? Self-talk mostly happens on a sub-conscious level. Unless you pay attention to your self-talk it will continue mostly unnoticed. The pattern of your self-talk will be either mostly positive or mostly negative. Along with other less-positive lifestyle habits, allowing negative self-talk to continue will have a negative impact on your life. From time to time, every day, make an effort to listen to your self-talk.
How do I control my self-talk? You don't actually 'control' your self-talk but you can influence the pattern of your self-talk (positive vs. negative) by choosing to practice other aspects of positive lifestyle. You can, from time to time, pay attention to your self-talk. Notice your patterns. You can choose to consciously reinforce the positive self-talk while ejecting or transforming the negative self-talk. When you become aware that your pattern of self-talk is too negative eject the negative self-talk and replace it with a more positive substitution. You will notice that positive self-talk will benefit your life greatly.
What do I do to influence a more positive self-talk? You will come to see how your patterns of lifestyle, conscious and sub-conscious thought and emotion are alike and inseparable. If you change your lifestyle, such as adding exercise, your conscious thought patterns, sub-conscious thought patterns (self-talk) and emotional patterns will also change. When you change your thought pattern, your lifestyle and emotional state will become more inline with your revised thought pattern. When your emotional state-of-mind changes (usually caused by an external event), your thought pattern and lifestyle activities will coincide with your emotional state. Self-talk is 'free-thought', it happens whether you want it to or not and you can't completely control all of the thoughts that might be processed by your mind. The best Influence you have over a more positive self-talk is to practice other components of positive lifestyle; - Positive Thinking - Positive Affirmation - Gratitude - Forgiveness - Healthy diet and exercise - Rest and meditation - Avoid negative stress - Associate with positive people
